Elmo Cumberbatch received more than just one birthday present this year!
On July 3, his 70th birthday, his daughters Simone and Shari Cumberbatch both gave birth to girls at Mercy Medical Center in Rockville Centre, New York.
Both women were due to deliver their girls in the middle of July, but “baby Liberty and Hailey had other plans,” the hospital wrote in a Facebook post.
Simone chose to have a C-section on July 3 so that her father could share a birthday with the new baby, according to WCBS. However, she didn’t think her sister Shari would be in labor the same day.
“I requested it, but we didn’t know we was gonna get two the same day,” Simone told the station. Shari joked: “They’re like twins! They’ll be close.”
“The doctor said, ‘We’ve got an issue. Your sister was induced and I didn’t expect her to go into labor until later but she’s 8 centimeters dilated and I’m going to have to take care of that,'” Simone told GMA.
Shari was first to welcome her daughter, Hailey, at 12:57 p.m. Simone gave birth to Liberty just hours later at 5:30 p.m.
“I always used to say what if, what if it happened, not knowing it would actually happen,” the new grandfather added.
Photos from the post show the new mothers with their father, Elmo, smiling as he holds his granddaughters.
“The family says that Fourth of July festivities will never be the same,” read the post. “Grandpa, moms and babies are all doing great!”
Dr. Jahanshah Seraji, who delivered both babies, shared it was first time he’s ever witnessed a happy accident like this, according to Fox 5 NY.
“I have the most rewarding, but hardest job in the world. Moments like this make it all worthwhile,” he said.
