Kate Middleton: All the royal rules the Duchess has to follow – and what she won’t do

Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, is the wife of Prince William, 37. The royal will regularly step out on behalf of the Queen and has to follow some royal rules when doing so. What does she have to do?

Prince William is second in line to the throne which means Kate’s role in the family is very important.

The Duchess of Cambridge has been a working member of the Royal Family since 2011 and she seems comfortable in the position.

The Queen is happy for the mother-of-three to represent the monarchy and the two royals have reportedly formed a close relationship.

While Kate will often follow royal protocol, there have been a few occasions when she has skipped on tradition.

Royal duties

There are certain events that all senior members of the Royal Family are expected to attend.

While Kate will usually treat royal fans to an appearance at these, she has decided against this in the past.

When Princess Charlotte was just one-years-old, Kate chose staying with her children over completing an official engagement.

In 2016, Kate did not present the first battalion Irish guard with a shamrock for St Patrick’s Day like she usually would.

A Palace statement read: “While the Duchess has accompanied the Duke every year since his appointment in 2012, and will do so again in future, this year she sadly could not make it because she is prioritising time with her children before next month’s tour of India and Bhutan.”

Travel with Prince William and Prince George

Traditionally, Royal Family members who are high up in the line of succession will not travel together.

This rule was put into place to protect the family in case anything were to go wrong.

However, Kate and Prince William have not strictly followed this protocol.

The Cambridges have often travelled with both Prince William and Prince George in the same vessel for family trips and duties.

Royal style

Being a royal comes with a list of style rules that should be followed.

This includes avoiding v-neck styles and not wearing outfits with a short hemline.

The mother-of-three usually wears outfits that are fashionable while being conservative.

However, she has previously sported shorter hemlines and opted against tights.
