DEAR DEIDRE: I am so worried about my grandparents., who are in their eighties, but I’m worried that I could make things worse by trying to help them.
I am a girl of 21. My grandparents are lovely people but don’t keep themselves or their home very clean so I worry about their hygiene.
I stayed with them a couple of weeks ago and cleaned their house, washed their clothes etc, but I live a three-hour drive away so I can’t even leave their shopping on their doorstep.
I would like to stay to look after them and keep them company but I was in London last week until I started working from home.
They were going out last week to pubs etc but of course have stopped now. I am so torn. I don’t want the two of them stuck there feeling isolated and worried.

DEIDRE SAYS: I understand how worried you feel. I’m afraid I can’t advise you go and stay with them now but you can be a support at a distance.
Phone them every day. Remind them endlessly about the hygiene rules. If they’re not online print the guidelines out and put them in the post to them.
You can help them organise their shopping. Supermarkets are organising special slots for deliveries to the elderly and vulnerable.
See their websites for details and check out the advice on www.ageuk.org.uk.
