DEAR DEIDRE: THREE years ago, I broke up with my long-term girlfriend.
I didn’t go about it the right way and ended up hurting her.
During lockdown, I found myself missing her so much.
I am 34 while she is now 32.
We haven’t spoken since we broke up but my guilt and shame still eat me up.
I long for forgiveness and maybe a second chance.
But I don’t know what to do – how to redeem myself, or whether I should even try to contact her

DEIDRE SAYS: You must be careful that you don’t risk repeating the hurt all over again.
You need to understand how and why you handled the break-up badly and why you wanted to break with her at all.
Are you sure you have developed enough not to repeat the pattern?
She might have moved on anyway but it is worth talking things over with a counsellor (bacp.co.uk), as that self-knowledge will help in any future relationship.
