I am so angry my sister nearly got raped and the boy will get away with it – The Sun

DEAR DEIDRE: WILL I ever get justice for my sister? She was seriously sexually assaulted and I am worried that the perpetrator will get away with his dreadful behaviour.

I only heard about it last week when I came back from a camping holiday in Italy with my friends. We are all in our early twenties.

My sister is 17. A boy she knows from school and trusted got drunk and tried to have sex with her. She managed to fight him off but she is very traumatised by what happened.

I am so angry. She begged my parents not to report it as she doesn’t want everyone to know what happened to her, so they didn’t, though they’re upset.

But surely the boy who caused this distress should pay?

DEIDRE SAYS: Yes, he should, but it is important to respect your sister’s feelings or she will feel violated again.

Encourage her to share her feelings with you and just listen and hug her, without telling her what you believe she should do. You can both find support through Rape Crisis (rapecrisis.org.uk, 0808 802 9999).

Hopefully she will then feel able to share what happened to her more widely.
