Disneys Eternals Leading At Box Office, Adds $27.5 Million Over The Weekend

Disney’s Marvel franchise Eternals continues to lead the box office over the weekend, adding $27.5 million, which brings the movie’s total gross to $118.8 million. Despite having a lackluster review from the critics, Eternals continues to slay the box office, generating millions of sales from over 4000 theaters. The movie grossed $71 million on its opening weekend. With the addition of the grosses over the weekend, the film officially crossed the $100 million domestically, making it one of the few movies ever to earn over $100 million in 2021.

The film is directed by the Oscar winner Chloe Zhao and features big stars Gemma Chan, Kumail Nanjiani, and Angelina Jolie. Though the 2nd week of Eternals fell about 61% from their debut week, it is still a success considering the film already made $281.4 million globally as of the moment. It is not uncommon for a superhero movie to drop sales from the 2nd week; the previous Disney and Marvel movies Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings dropped 52% on sales on its 2nd week. Both movies played exclusively in the theaters; their only difference is that Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings got good reviews from the critics while Eternals fell short on it. Eternals follows the movie Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings as the theatrical-only release for Marvel. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings are currently streaming on Disney+ after it left the theater.

Clifford the Big Red Dog, which opened in the theaters during the week, comes 2nd place to Eternals. It made about $16.4 million from about 3,700 theaters over the weekend and $22 million in total across its five-day release. The movie is available to stream as well for Paramount+ subscribers. The movie Dune followed on the third spot with $5.5 million and No Time To Die in the fourth spot at $4.6 million. The movie Venom Let There Be Carnage is coming in last and fifth place:  with $4 million. Venom already grossed $200 million at the domestic box office, making the 2nd pandemic era film earn more than $200 million. The other movie to ever gross $200 million is Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

Some of the other movies showed satisfaction, with Kenneth Branagh’s semi-autobiographical film Belfast making $1.8 million from about 580 theaters. The movie Spencer featuring Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana made $1.5 million from 1,265 theaters, and Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch made $1.8 million.
