A dentist has revealed the ancient practice he swears by to remove bacteria from the mouth and promote good oral hygiene.

Dr Lewis Ehrlich, from the Sydney Holistic Dental Centre, said the mouth is connected to the rest of the body, and so something like oil pulling works wonders at assisting your general health.  

‘Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic practice where you swish a spoonful of coconut oil around the mouth and then spit after 15-20 minutes,’ Dr Ehrlich posted on Facebook. 

‘Among other things, it is done for its oral health benefits.’

Dr Ehrlich explained that there has been countless research done on oil pulling and the supposed benefits over the years.

But it’s only recently that a few randomised control trials have truly highlighted the benefits of the practice.

‘One randomised control trial showed that oil pulling displayed a similar inhibitory activity on plaque accumulation to chlorhexidine mouthwash,’ Dr Ehrlich said.

‘The other study showed that oil pulling reduced the amount of strep mutans (a bacteria that causes tooth decay) in saliva in a statistically significant way.’

Spit the oil into the sink when you are done, and rinse your mouth well with water before eating or drinking anything else.

‘Remembering that the mouth is connected to the rest of the body, the other good thing about oil pulling is that it is unlikely to cause any systemic issues,’ Dr Ehrlich said. 

What are the benefits of oil pulling? 

1. Kills harmful bacteria in your mouth: There are 700 types of bacteria that can live in your mouth, and up to 350 of them can be found at any one time. Studies have shown that oil pulling can help kill some of these bacteria.

2. Helps to reduce bad breath: The practice is as effective as chlorhexidine (mouthwash) at reducing bad breath.

3. May help to prevent cavities: Several studies have found that oil pulling can help reduce the number of bacteria in the mouth, preventing tooth decay. 

4. Reduces gum health and inflammation: Gingivitis is a type of gum disease marked by red, swollen gums that bleed easily. Oil pulling may be an effective remedy to improve gum health and reduce inflammation.

The benefits include killing harmful bacteria, reducing bad breath, preventing cavities, reducing gum decay and cutting inflammation.

Some even say the practice can help with the whitening of the teeth, if done enough.
