Periods continue to be a taboo subject for a lot of people and because they're not discussed much, that can lead to some common myths around what you can and can't do during your time of the month.

For example, there are often myths around whether you can swim, have sex or get pregnant on your period. There's even a myth that PMS isn't real (spoiler alert – it absolutely is).

Myth #1 – You shouldn’t have sex on your period

You may actually feel more aroused around your time of the month. Also, if you suffer from cramps, orgasming may help relieve them along with other PMS symptoms. What’s more, having sex may make your periods shorter. This is because the muscle contractions that come with orgasms push the uterus contents out faster.

Myth #2 – You shouldn’t swim when you’re on your period

There is no reason not to swim while on your period. In fact, it may actually help ease cramps. What's more no there's no evidence that swimming on your period will make you a shark's breakfast (another myth out there).

Myth #4 – You can’t get pregnant if you have sex during your period

While the chances are slim, it is possible to get pregnant if you have unprotected sex during your period, particularly if you have a shorter cycle.

The chances of getting pregnant are highest during ovulation, which happens 12 days before your period starts. Every woman’s cycle is different, and yours may change from month to month. If you have a short menstrual cycle, then your chance of getting pregnant is higher.

Also, keep in mind that sperm can stay alive in your body for up to seven days. This means that if you have a 22-day cycle and you ovulate soon after getting your period, there’s a chance you could release an egg while sperm is still in your reproductive tract.

Myth #5 – You Shouldn’t Exercise on Your Period

FALSE.

Exercising during your period can be a godsend in decreasing feelings of PMT. What’s more, it can help with tiredness, mood swings and when done regularly. It can also alleviate those dreaded cramps, headaches and back pain that often comes with that time of the month. In addition, you’ll get an added endorphins high which should improve your mood.
