Despite just debuting on July 22, 2022, ADOR‘s girl group NewJeans has captured hearts around the world. Reaching international super status, the musical flair and intrinsic charm of members Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin, and Hyein have allowed songs like “Ditto,” “OMG,” “Hype Boy,” and “Attention” to reach the top 40 of Global Top Songs chart.
The group has also amassed over 3.7 million subscribers and garnered 1.8 billion views on YouTube. Sharing more than 200 videos on the official NewJeans YouTube channel, their music videos, vlogs, dance practice clips, performance videos, behind-the-scenes clips, and Shorts have topped the charts in 20 markets globally on YouTube.
Most recently, following the release of music videos for “Super Shy” and “New Jeans” off of their 2nd EP album, Get Up, NewJeans launched the “#ImSuperShy Challenge,” exclusively on YouTube Shorts. Accompanying the wildly popular summer anthem, the challenge sees Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin, and Hyein invite Bunnies, the name of NewJeans fans, to show off their moves in the build-up to the release of their second studio album.
“Super Shy” is now charting across 30 global markets on YouTube, after debuting in the top ten of the Top Songs chart in multiple regions. Notably hitting #1 in Korea, #2 in Australia and Canada, #3 in Japan, and #8 in the United States. The song is now currently sitting at #2 on Youtube’s Global Top Songs chart.
Hypebeast recently caught up with NewJeans to discuss the YouTube Shorts #ImSuperShy Challenge, their new music, and upcoming festival performances. Catch our interview with NewJeans below.
You recently held Bunnies Camp, how was it seeing all your fans at the sold-out fan meet?
Haerin: Yeah, we are really truly amazed by the immense interest in support that we are gaining from our fans. And we are really incredibly grateful to our Bunnies for giving us such unforgettable moments and memories. It was an even more meaningful experience to surprise our fans by presenting “ETA,” which is one of the triple title tracks for this album.
Do you have any tips for those that want to take part in your YouTube Shorts Exclusive “#ImSuperShy Challenge?”
Danielle: To be honest, I don’t have any tips. I just want people to just get creative. Any possible way you could possibly dance to “Super Shy!” So far there have been a lot of Shorts uploaded and we’ve been watching them all and really really enjoying them. Just be creative, we really encourage you to have a lot of fun with it, cause that’s the whole purpose.
In the music video for “New Jeans,” we got to see you girls reimagined into our generation’s The Powerpuff Girls. What superpower did you want your superhero persona to have?
Danielle: Well, I personally wanted to have a superpower where I could heal animals and plants, and then I could also communicate with them. I thought that would be really cool. But then I heard the other members and what they decided, Minji had a superpower where she can make chocolate. I was like that’s so random, but now that I think about it that’s also really cool. That’d be so cool if I could make some sort of food or something and be able to share it.
Minji: Yeah, in the music video, I chose the superpower to create infinite chocolate. But if I could choose a different superpower, how do I explain it? With one snap, I can make my room clean. Ha ha.
Group: A cleaning superpower? That’s fun. A really helpful superpower.
You’ll be releasing a music video for each of your new tracks, how do you feel about getting to express the different concepts through each visual?
Hyein: Our new EP Get Up has six tracks, and each song has its unique story and concept. So just listening to it, if you just focus on all the different stories and concept elements, I’m sure that our fans will never have a chance to get tired. It was like that when we heard the project for the first time as well. The distinct music videos and performances will offer an exploration of different musical genres and our unique vocals. I think it’s going to be a blast to listen to all the different tracks.
As we near the release of Get Up, what can fans look forward to?
Hyein: With this new EP, Get Up, we are making a comeback after six months. I think there’s a lot of anticipation and excitement over this new album, I promise, it’ll be a lot of fun just listening to these tracks. And these songs really have the unique color of NewJeans. So I really hope you will enjoy it.
Hanni: I also think personally, when we first looked at these songs and the direction, we were really intrigued by how different it really is from what we’ve released. I think the Bunnies are going to be very shocked. And we’re really looking forward to everyone’s reaction to the remaining songs we haven’t released yet.
You’ll be performing at Lollapalooza and Summer Sonic Festival this August, is there anything you want to say to fans that are undoubtedly excited to see you on stage?
Minji: Yes, it will be our first time performing at a festival. It’s really exciting to be performing as NewJeans and we are working really hard on different stages that are going to highlight our unique charm. So please everyone look forward to it with a lot of expectation.
Danielle: When it comes to meeting our fans performing we’re always excited, no matter what. For it to be our first time performing overseas, as well as our first time visiting the States as a group as well. We’re excited about everything Lollapalooza and Summer Sonic have in store. The crowd’s energy, the festival, and everything, we’re just really looking forward to everything.
