Jane Fonda, 84, says she's 'ready' for death after living a 'great life'

Jane Fonda has said she is ‘aware’ that she won’t ‘be around for much longer’ but isn’t afraid of death because she has lived ‘a great life’.

The 84-year-old Hollywood icon was discussing the issues that have been important to her over the years, and for which she’s campaigned, as she stressed the importance of celebrities using their platforms to talk about causes close to their heart.

The two-time Oscar winner and activist has become just as known for her campaigning as she has her performances, famously protesting the Vietnam War as well as since then supporting environmental, feminist, LGBTQ+ and political causes.

Discussing mortality as she approaches her 85th birthday in December, she mused that she was ‘not going to be around for much longer’.

‘When you get to be my age, you’d better be aware of the amount of time that is behind you, as opposed to in front of you. I mean, that’s just realistic,’ she added.

However, the star maintained that she wasn’t afraid about facing death because she felt happy with the life she has led.

‘I’m not afraid of going. I’m ready. I’ve had a great life. Not that I want to go, but I’m aware that it’s going to be sooner rather than later,’ she told Entertainment Tonight.

Fonda, who recently also said she hoped she could be an example to young people so that ‘they won’t be afraid of getting older’, revealed in September that she had been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

The Grace and Frankie star confirmed the news on Instagram, explaining that she has started chemotherapy treatment for the cancer, calling it ‘very treatable’ and saying as a consequence she felt ‘very lucky’.

Even during her personal health update, the actress remained steadfast in her role as an activist, vowing to continue her fight for climate awareness during the elections, adding: ‘The midterms are looming, and they are beyond consequential so you can count on me to be right there together with you as we grow our army of climate champions.’

Fonda has also said following the start of her treatment that she feels ‘stronger than I have in years’.
