Silverchair frontman Daniel Johns has received $470,000 in a settlement from News Corp. over an article that claimed Johns visited a brothel.
Johns received $170,000 in addition to having his legal costs of up to $300,000 covered by the media giant. News Corp. also published an apology to the musician.
Johns had sued News Corp. over an article published in The Sunday Telegraph last August that claimed he had been at a Sydney brothel. In the lawsuit, Johns described the article as “simply untrue” and “hurtful, humiliating, and damaging to me and my family”.
Mistress Scarlett, owner of the Kastle brothel, publicly supported Johns and denied the front page story.
The Sunday Telegraph published a retraction on page 3 last Sunday, which reads, “The story was wrong. Mr Johns was not leaving the brothel and The Sunday Telegraph accepts he has never been there at any other time. Mr Johns was in the area because he had been visiting a friend who lived in the vicinity of The Kastle.”
Johns has not yet commented publicly about the settlement. However, he tweeted, “Now back to the music.”
