SEBASTIAN SHAKESPEARE: Princes William and Harry helped Tom Bradby

SEBASTIAN SHAKESPEARE: ITV’s Tom Bradby reveals Princes William and Harry ‘made it OK’ to admit he was ill when the newsreader took extended sick leave due to crippling insomnia

Newsreader Tom Bradby has revealed how Princes William and Harry inspired him to be honest about his mental health.

The ITV News At Ten anchorman, who has become a friend of the royal brothers, had to go on extended sick leave in 2018 because he was suffering from crippling insomnia.

William and Harry have campaigned for years on the importance of speaking about mental illness and removing the stigma surrounding it.

Bradby says, ‘I later told them, “This made a big difference to me personally; the things you said made it easier for me to say to my employer, look I’m not well, I need to take three months off.”

‘Before that, I genuinely thought, I cannot not go into work because of a mental health issue, that’s ridiculous.’

Bradby adds: ‘I can remember thinking as I made the call to ITN, “I’m kind of OK to admit to this. I think them [Princes William and Harry] speaking out was a game-changer because of their immensely powerful position.

‘Also, it’s just logic that they’ve had mental health issues due to their mum’s death — they’d be superhuman if they didn’t.’

Bradby established a warm relationship with the Princes as ITV’s royal correspondent and was asked to conduct the first interview with William and Kate Middleton after they announced their engagement in 2010

He was invited to their wedding at Westminster Abbey with his wife, Claudia, a jewellery designer, whose father was a vice-admiral in the Royal Navy.

His bond with Harry was so firm that he was asked to present a documentary on the Prince’s official visit to Africa last year in which Meghan voiced her unhappiness with life in the Royal Family. ‘Not many people have asked if I’m OK,’ she told him.

Has ‘king of clubs’ Robin Birley gone barking mad?

The owner of 5 Hertford Street has said that his pooch Peggy will take over the club’s Instagram account on July 13 to give members a behind-the-scenes insight into the place.

Hope she doesn’t make a dog’s dinner of it . . .

Crown star Claire is in the pink

The Crown star Claire Foy recently admitted she’s been eating like a ‘giant pig’ during lockdown, feasting on crisps, pizza and beer.

But it appears to have had little effect on her svelte frame, which she showed off in a sleeveless pink jumpsuit in a London park.

The 36-year-old, who has more free time on her hands now that her five-year-old daughter, Ivy Rose, is back at school, indulged her sweet tooth as she tucked into an ice cream.

Claire split from her daughter’s father, actor Stephen Campbell Moore, in 2018 after four years of marriage.

Tennis fans are missing Wimbledon this year, but few more so than Robin’s Nest actress Tessa Wyatt.

Since 1988, Tessa and her husband, property developer Bill Harkness, have rented out their eight-bedroom home overlooking the All England Club to players in the Championships.

‘It’s sad for many reasons that Wimbledon had to be cancelled, including for our chosen charities,’ says Tessa.

Is lockdown love scene the closest thing to crazy Katie’s ever done?

No social distancing for Katie Melua, who canoodles with the Dunkirk and Star Wars actor Billy Howle in a video filmed during lockdown for her single A Love Like That.

‘I’m really proud of the video,’ says the singer.

‘We went with just me and Billy on screen, we tried to show with subtle gestures and nuances the truth of love in its early stages. Hopefully everyone can enjoy watching it.’

Let’s hope Katie’s husband, former Superbike champion James Toseland, shares the pleasure.

Katie’s direct physical contact with Howle was not the closest thing to crazy, I am assured.

‘The shoot took place following Advertising Producers Association lockdown guidelines.

‘Katie and Billy isolated before and after the shoot to enable the scenes to be possible, as well as being tested for Covid-19,’ her team says.

She always looks the image of groomed perfection, but actress Gillian Anderson confesses she often sleeps in her make-up.

‘Sometimes I cleanse and moisturise before bed and sometimes I sleep with make-up on. I know . . . terrible.’

Meanwhile, during the coronavirus crisis, her wardrobe has been ‘rotating between three tops and bottoms and flip-flops and trainers. That’s me sorted for the week.’

Comic roasts celebrity chefs

TV’s Meera Syal feels it’s unfair that most celebrity cooks are male.

‘I find it bemusing that most famous chefs are men,’ The Kumars At No. 42 star says. ‘The really creative cooks are the women who transform whatever is in the cupboard into three meals a day. That’s proper cheffing, not doing something fancy with a blow torch.’

Meera grew up in the UK on the Punjabi immigrant home cooking of her mother and aunties. Not that she always appreciated Indian food when she was a child in Staffordshire.

‘Like most first-generation Indian kids, I went through a stage of thinking Indian food was boring and I begged for ‘proper’ food like fish fingers and chips.

‘But mostly anything English on offer in the 1970s was a shocker. I couldn’t believe vegetables were boiled to within an inch of their lives and presented with no flavouring.’

Mick’s ex nets a toyboy

Sir Mick Jagger’s ex-girlfriend, Brazilian TV host Luciana Gimenez, appears to have lost her appetite for older men.

After ending her 12-year marriage to media boss Marcelo de Carvalho, 58, she is now enjoying romance with millionaire businessman Eduardo Buffara, 29.

As her love grows, though, so does the model’s waistline.

Luciana, 50, who has a 21-year-old son with the Rolling Stone, says: ‘In quarantine I have gained a little weight, ordering pizza with my boyfriend.’
