Olympian Sam Quek, 32, found herself at the centre of a “is she pregnant or has she put on weight” debate, after her stint on The One Show on Tuesday evening left one fan wondering whether she was expecting another baby. The hockey player is indeed pregnant, but the manner in which the comment was written sparked anger among others.
Wow how rude is that
Sam on the other hand, didn’t take the comment to heart, making a light-hearted joke in response.
It comes after the Twitter user known as Jim Kitt, wrote: “Is Sam preggers or carrying a bit of timber? #TheOneShow.”
It wasn’t long before she came across the post and shared a humorous reply.
“Me: ‘…And if you have any questions to do with anything featured on tonight’s show, you can get in touch with us by tweeting #TheOneShow,'” she penned before poking fun at Jim’s reply.
Other fans rushed to the comments section to share their disdain at Jim’s tweet, with one saying: “Imagine thinking this is acceptable to speak to a woman like that?! Pregnant or not, why refer to someone’s weight. People are weird.”
Another agreed: “Wow how rude is that. You look absolutely stunning, I wish I had that pregnancy glow when I was pregnant!!”
“Timber? It’s called a hockey stick,” a third joked.
A fourth winked: “Obviously a big fan of yours.”
Sam, who won gold with Team GB’s women’s hockey team at Rio 2016, and her husband Tom Mairs, share daughter Molly, and recently announced they are expecting another baby who is due to join their growing family next year.
The Question Of Sport star is 17 weeks pregnant, and they revealed they couldn’t be happier with the news.
Taking to Instagram, Sam told her followers: “Absolutely delighted to share the news that we are expecting another baby to join our family next year.
“We are over the moon that Molly will have a brother or sister to play with and grow up along side. Our hearts are full.”
Her due date is two weeks after Molly turns one on 2 March next year, but while she is is too young to understand what’s happening just yet, the pair have no doubt that she will be an “amazing” big sister.
In an interview with The Mirror, Sam laughed: “It’s come along quite quickly, so we were pleasantly surprised.”
But with two very young children to cope with, she admitted that it will be “tough logistically”.
“I’m crossing my fingers that we have another Molly,” she said.
“She’s so chilled and she’s slept through from 7pm to 7am since she was two months old. The next one could be the complete opposite.
“I’m a natural worrier, but we’re just going to do everything the same and hope for the best.”
The sportswoman also revealed that she suffered a heartbreaking miscarriage at 10 weeks before getting pregnant with Molly.
And it’s because of this, that the pair don’t like to get “too excited” until they’ve had the 12-week scan.
Tom explained that they didn’t think they’d get pregnant again so quickly after Molly, but they are “actually really pleased” that they’re going have two children so close in age.
