Kate Garraway, 53, has been working tirelessly to look after her two children while fulfilling work commitments, as her husband Derek Draper, 53, has remained in hospital after contracting coronavirus last year. However, ITV bosses allowed the Good Morning Britain presenter to take some time away from the show to recuperate at home.

She revealed: “ITV gave me time off as I hadn’t been feeling well.

“The chickens came home to roost after a long year, and I just took some holiday at home.

“I had a lot of sleep and medicine and feeling much better,” she added.

Kate spent Christmas apart from Derek due to coronavirus restrictions, as she addressed the ongoing lockdown.

She continued: “I haven’t been able to see him since Christmas, we’re back into a situation of looking at strangers in masks.

“That’s the situation for everybody at the moment. It’s tough. When you’re someone like him, dealing with a consciousness problem and trying to emerge, I can’t help but fear it’s not helpful.

“There’s no end in sight to that. There’s no one to blame or be angry with. It’s tough.”

Derek was rushed to hospital last March with a near-fatal case of coronavirus.

He has remained in hospital ever since, and Kate admitted doctors at the time had noted it was once of the worse cases of infection they had seen.

Opening up on Derek’s condition, Kate said: “We’re really hoping we’re on some kind of trajectory of improvement.

“It’s very much two steps forward, three steps back.

“But if I think back to where we were in March 2020, when Derek’s lungs were solid with infection and his infection rates were the highest doctors had seen in anyone who has lived, we’re undoubtedly in a more positive place,” she added to Good Housekeeping.

Since his hospitalisation, Kate has been the sole parent to their two children Darcy, 14, and Billy, 10.

The star has “struggled” to cope looking after the children on her own.

Kate remains unsure if Derek will now ever make a full recovery but is hopeful.

She explained on the 5 Years Time podcast: “It’s been really tough for us. Derek got really sick at the beginning of March…

“Even though we’re hoping he can recover, it’s taking a very, very long time.

“We don’t know how much he can recover. So that’s impacted on us obviously dramatically. So, it’s been really difficult.”

However, thankfully Kate has had the support of her friends including Ranvir Singh, who has offered her parenting advice.

She shared: “I’m lucky that I’m being supported by lots of friends, too, and Ranvir has been really helpful because she’s been operating as a single mum since her son, Tushaan, was very little.”
