James Cracknell’s ex-wife Beverley Turner has jumped to the defence of her ex-husband after critics claimed he is having a ‘mid-life crisis’.

The television and radio presenter, 45, said that James is ‘just an athlete doing a reality show’, as she referenced his upcoming turn on Strictly Come Dancing.

Beverley claimed that the recent backlash James has received is ‘unfair’ and described her ex-husband as a ‘driven man’ who sets goals.

Taking to Twitter to have her say, Beverley wrote: ‘Blimey this is really unfair. He’s a driven man. Olympians can’t just sit still! He’ll always set goal after goal. He’s just an athlete doing a reality show.’

Beverley and James announced in March that they had decided to split last year after 17 years of marriage, from which they share son Croyde, 15 and two daughters, Kili, 10, and eight-year-old Trixie.

James has since moved on with American financier Jordan Connell, whom he met while studying philosophy at Cambridge University.

Jordan, who is in her early 30s, spent 12 months studying for an MBA at the prestigious university before returning to her native city of New York. She is now understood to split her time between London and the US.

One friend told The Mail on Sunday: ‘They both had a very busy year at Cambridge and have a lot going on in their individual lives right now but they make one another very happy. It’s clear to anyone who spends time with them that they are good for each other.’

Only last month, James and Beverley, were granted a divorce after she petitioned for it on the grounds of unreasonable behaviour, which he did not oppose.

The pair, however, have ensured their split has remained amicable for the sake of their three children.

Beverley has even been supportive of his forthcoming appearance on Strictly, despite banning him in the past. However, she has poked fun at his dancing abilities, saying: ‘Prepare to see James completely up the creek without a paddle.’

Beverley added: ‘This week, the kids and I all watched a rehearsal video over James’s shoulder at the kitchen table in absolute silence. Kiki took a deep breath and patted him on the shoulder. “Well at least you can get better Daddy…” ’

James has been seen several times with the young blonde who he met during their time together at Cambridge.

In July, a source told MailOnline of the blossoming friendship: ‘They have become very close and since his marriage break up there are few people who would deny him the support of an attractive young woman.

‘The end of James’ marriage to Bev has been amicable and friendly but there’s always going to be regret and maybe loneliness when something like that happens so it’s great he’s going his own way.’
