Fern Britton, 63, has revealed she struggled to unpack all of her things after boxes arrived at her home in Cornwall. The emotional moment came after the author moved out of the house she shared with estranged husband Phil Vickery, 60, following their shock split in 2020.
The former This Morning star admitted she called her friends for assistance at the time, as she “could not face unpacking it all” after her 20-year marriage to the TV chef “died”.
Fern explained: “I have had a bad two or three years. Both of my parents died, my beloved cat died and unfortunately my marriage died.”
Despite the painful experience, Fern credited her good pals for getting her through it.
The TV star opened up on her marriage ending in a new chat with BBC Breakfast weather presenter Carol Kirkwood, 59, for online platform Fane.co.uk to promote Fern’s latest book, Daughters Of Cornwall.
She said: “I have got a couple of very good girlfriends down here in Cornwall and they just make me laugh all the time.
“They came round a while ago to help me clear my garage. Now that’s a friend, isn’t it?
“There was an awful lot that had arrived from my old home and I could not face unpacking it all.
“They came and helped me and they brought boxes and big thick pens and labels.”
Detailing a prank her friends pulled on her to lift her spirits, Fern divulged: “We spent all day and their partners were lovely and put up shelves for me, and a floor.
“Then at the end of the day, one of the boxes had a label on, saying, ‘Sex toys to be sorted,’ rubbed out and, ‘Outdoor lights,’ put on it, just to make me laugh.”
Fern announced her split on Twitter last year in a statement that read: “After more than 20 happy years together, Phil and I have decided to go our separate ways.
“We will always share a great friendship and our lovely children.”

Fern and Phil first met while hosting Ready Steady Cook together in 1999.
The pair then tied the knot the following year before welcoming their daughter Winnie in 2001.
They went on to entertain viewers on This Morning together, which Fern hosted for a decade from 1999, while Phil made his debut as the show’s resident chef in 2006.
Fern is also mum to twins Harry and Jack, and daughter Grace from her first marriage to TV executive Clive Jones.
The former couple married in 1988 but separated 10 years later.
Despite the difficulties she faced in moving out of her marital home, Fern recently gushed over how much she enjoys living in Cornwall now.
She told Cornwall Live: “I’ve always been coming to Cornwall since I was a baby and I’ve always loved it.”
The star recalled: “”I would be down on the beach, feeling the cold sand on my feet after a warm day and you could smell the sea; the magic of tomorrow the sun’s out and I’m going to be on this beach.
“I still have that feeling – the smell of it as you cross the border, I open the car window and breathe in deeply.”
