Charlie Lawson, 61, is exceptionally close with his former Coronation Street colleague Beverley Callard, 64,  and has revealed some surprising facts about the I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! star. He recalled that the Liz McDonald actress would often “put the fear of God” into people she worked with and would be particularly firm with Simon Gregson, who plays her son Steve McDonald on the soap.

Charlie played Jim McDonald, the onscreen husband of Beverley on the soap for 11 years, and the pair have remained friends for over three decades.

When asked if he had ever upset Beverley, the actor said: “No we knew each other too well. She was patient with me when I was on the lash.

“But I never let her down or vice versa- we respected each other deeply. I’ve seen other people getting it in the neck and they don’t come back for more, put it that way.

“I’ve seen her put the fear of God into a few people,” he added to OK! magazine.

Beverley would also be quick to discipline Simon Gregson on the programme, who began his role on the show when he was only 14 years old back in 1989.

Charlie continued: “She had to be quite firm with Simon. [Gregson, who plays Steve McDonald] a few times, but he was only 14 when he started on the show.

The actress’s final scenes as barmaid Liz McDonald will air next year as she is set to leave the soap.

It comes as earlier this year Beverley was left in excruciating pain and needing physio after her hip surgery went wrong.

The star was left needing a full hip replacement to fix her crumbling joint after the initial surgery.

Beverley told MailOnline: “This is the toughest fight of my life but I am determined to win it.

“I love playing her [Liz] and she has inspired me to want to get on my feet again so I can do it one last time.”

The revelation comes after the star suddenly disappeared from the soap earlier in the year, leading to questions.

The painful aftermath of the operation left Beverley fearing for her career.

She continued: “I had been able to stand for maybe 20 seconds but I had no idea how painful and tiring it would be to start walking again – even to take one step.

“That first step was so important.

“I remember standing up and putting one foot in front of the other and wanting to cry.

“This was something I had taken for granted all my life and now I was having to learn it all again.

“Luckily, I have the most amazing physio and day by day I am getting stronger and I am determined not to be a woman in her 60s who can’t be healthy and active,” she said.

Now the star is appearing in the latest series of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! and is going from strength to strength in the contest.

I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! airs every night at 9pm on ITV.
